It Snow Problem

Winter in Minnesota is a beautiful time of year. The beauty sometimes outweighs the challenges, but – driving can quickly become hazardous. And parking in Minneapolis and St. Paul used to be a hassle… not so much any more.

Posted on Categories TipsTags , , , , ,

With cold weather and snow just around the corner we are gearing up for parking limitations and plowing alerts. It’s hard to believe we haven’t had a major snow accumulation yet this winter. Bring it on! We are ready for it whenever it arrives. Our property managers have plans in place for quick shoveling as needed and plowing begins after two or more inches are on the ground. We’ve communicated our procedures to each metro and suburban resident and we’re prepared to call our plowing providers when needed.

At each of our communities we place handy containers of sidewalk rock salt and invite residents to spread it on walkways (in case we don’t get to it in a timely manner). We want to avoid slips and falls during this icy season.

Our St. Paul and Minneapolis properties have plans in place to communicate when to move cars for plowing. The city of Minneapolis features their snow emergency information online and offers an app to make it easy to park safely.  You can also see updates for St. Paul and download their winter snow parking app on their website.

A bonus for our residents is a one-stop-shop… Twitter! We use #ahaplows to alert all of our residents of plowing that is scheduled and offer recommendations for where to park. We don’t want to tow or ticket their vehicles. So, with the beautiful snowy season of winter upon us we are excited to gear-up for whatever comes our way.

New Brand. More Growth!

We’ve introduced our new bold and bright logo and website to the world. At Home Apartments is enjoying a season of growth and the challenges that arise. We’ve been maintaining great relationships with our current residents and welcoming more to our new communities.

In 2017 our company changed. The business remains the same, but the look and feel of the At Home Apartments brand has evolved. For 24 years we’ve been a rather quiet property development and management company. That all changed when we committed to an aggressive goal: to add 200 rental units to our portfolio each year. And we have! Our recent new developments have increased our units to over 4,500 in a matter of a few years. We continue to build new apartment communities in response to a high level of housing demand.

With the additional properties comes the demand for more staff. We’ve been filling the need by welcoming new employees to the AHA team. Soon we will be breaking ground on a new office building near our leasing office on Grand Avenue in Saint Paul. We are proud to be celebrating our 25th Anniversary this year and our new headquarters will be a welcomed benefit to the many advantages of working with At Home.

As our portfolio grows so does the need to market and promote our amazing properties. We launched this new responsive website in April and now display a fresh look with a logo and bold color pallet that broadcasts our desired message of “Making people feel At Home for 25 years!”

A fitting piece in the new promotion of At Home is to introduce ourselves in a two-page spread in one of our favorite magazines – SPACES. You’ll find our advertorial in the August-September edition available at no charge from local super markets and shops.

Meeting a need. There has not been a new multi-housing development in Mendota Heights, Minnesota for 30 years. We are proud to be a part of a new construction project which will include two nearby commercial buildings, ideal for a restaurant, coffee shop, and retail businesses. Inspired by the surrounding community, the yet-to-be-named project will be near slopes of lush green hills and flowing rivers. Historic Brownstone apartments require TLC and a level of understanding for the person lucky enough to dwell in one. We own and manage over 20 turn-of-the-century buildings in Saint Paul which sort of makes us brownstone experts. The advantages of living in these buildings include unique built-ins, original hardwood floors, large windows, high ceilings, claw foot bathtubs, and beautiful woodwork throughout.

Along with beauty comes a few challenges. The original plumbing doesn’t allow for heavy water pressure appliances like dishwashers. And the radiator providing heat does not allow for central air conditioning which requires an air duct system. So, you give up a few conveniences for the sake of historic charm.

Let us guide you through some helpful hints for living in a historic building with claw foot bathtubs, gas ranges, and radiant heating.

Claw Foot Bathtub

Our charming claw foot bathtubs are fun to soak in, but a challenge to shower in. We’ve installed a circular curtain rod to remedy that. If you have an older tub positioned away from the wall, you’ll need three shower curtains hanging on the rod to cover the entire circumference of the tub.

We’ve seen extensive water damage on the walls, window frames, and floor in apartments with improper shower curtains. Remember to keep your curtains inside the tub during use to avoid flooding the apartment below you. Taking care with your claw foot bathtub will save needless and costly repair (for which you may be liable).

Gas Range

The stove and oven range for you apartment is fueled by natural gas. On occasion the pilot light for your range may go out and emit a faint smell of natural gas into the apartment. Do not be alarmed as it is only a very trace amount of gas. Depending on the model of stove in your apartment, the pilot lights can be re-lit by following these steps:

  • If you have small vent slots between the front and back burner, take a lit match or lighter and place it into the opening until a small blue flame appears.
  • If there are no vents as described above, remove the grates from the burners and lift the top of the stove by pulling up on the front lip (above the oven door). You will find two small pilot light burners between the from and back stove burners. Hold a flame up to these small burners and the pilot lights should re-light.

Radiant Heating

Your building is equipped with a radiant heating system that used hot water heated by a central boiler. We have added modern upgrades, such as exterior temperature overrides, in order to conserve energy and maximize your comfort level. Yes – unlike forced-air heating systems used in newer apartment buildings, the pipe based system in your building takes some time to heat up and cool down. Follow these steps to ensure that your apartment is heated properly.

  • Keep furniture at least six inches away from baseboards.
  • Make sure your heating vents are all the way open.
  • Adjust your thermostat to increase the frequency with which heated water is allowed to circulate through your apartment.
  • Keep all interior windows closed at all times during the winter season. Opening windows to cool your apartment will only generate greater heating output.
  • If you do not have an internal wall mounted thermostat, please contact the rental office.

We strive to maintain your apartment temperature between 68 and 72 degrees in the winter months. If your apartment temperature is above or below that range, simply complete an online maintenance request and we will service your request as soon as possible.

Goodness. It’s a quality…

We all have the capacity to be good. And, we At Home also want to DO good. One way is to give to those in need. Now through December 15th we are challenging our residents and staff to donate to Second Harvest Heartland.

Today, one in 10 of our neighbors lives with daily hunger. One in six children in Minnesota is at risk of hunger. Seniors and post-secondary students are among the rising numbers of those in need of help.

As a company, we are excited to participate in a Food & Fund Drive supporting Second Harvest Heartland, the Upper Midwest’s largest hunger-relief organization.

There are two ways to participate and donate.

#1

Staff and residents can bring physical donations in to At Home management/leasing offices. Our physical goal is to collect 400 lbs of donations across the entire company.

#2

Go online and make a donation. Our online goal is to raise $2000. Together let's make a difference and DO good.
